Our mission is to reach the refugee and the local population not merely as an audience, but as people who have a stake in Radio Kwizera. Our task is, through our facilities and expertise, to facilitate their access to the airwaves, with a view to empowering them to articulate their concerns and mobilise for peace reconciliation and development.

Our mandate covers:

Information : Providing comprehensible, balanced and accurate news at the local, regional, national and international level.

Education : Providing formal educational programmes for primary schools students, and on-going education programmes in topics like health, nutrition, agriculture, environment, law, human rights.

Development : To offer a community approach of development, which is suposed to be understood as a process run by the people themselves improving their living conditions and increasing the opportunities available to them. Radio Kwizera programmes are meant to expand their knowledge and raise awareness for alternative and feasible methods of working and living.


Entertainment :Radio Kwizera meets the entertainment needs of the refugee and the local population. This includes music broadcasting,  which is culturally relevant to the listeners.

Culture : Radio Kwizera encourages a critical and balanced exploration of the listeners cultures. Radio Kwizera highlights the worth of local cultures in the face of powerful external influences and equips people to deal with these influences rather than being overwhelmed by them.

Religion : In our religous programmes, we adopt an open position so as to promote ecumenical and inter-religious dialogues meant to promote respectiful relationships hence fostering cohesion among the population.

Peace & Reconciliation: The radio promotes  peace and reconciliation, which is a core issue in our programmes. The radio has the mandate to be a tool for mutual understanding, peace building and keeping.


Under our editorial policy, we offer
 :

Service  to the audience : The Radio serves the refugee and the local population without discrimination and with an open attitude promoting dialogues and understanding. The only editorial restriction regards statements and programmes, which are offensive to other people, groups of people, organisations and religions.

Community involvement : A central aspect of Radio Kwizera's editorial policy consists in providing the means by which the community may dialogue with itself, Radio Kwizera is a community radio encouraging refugees and local people to have access to the airwaves.

Dialogue : Radio Kwizera promotes public debate and transparency. Radio Kwizera also encourages dialogue between the refugees and the local population.


Politics : On political issues Radio Kwizera keeps a strictly neutral position with regard to the political affairs and stands of its audience.

Our commitment expresses concern for :

Marginal and oppressed groups : Although Radio Kwizera addresses all people without any discrimination, its commitment gives priority to poor, and powerless. Radio Kwizera aims to create opportunities for marginal groups to speak for them and to organize their own actions for transformation and liberation.

Women, Youth and Children : Some programmes are especially dedicated to women, youth and children issues, women and youth are crucial for any structural change and development to take place while children are the future of any society. Radio Kwizera involves them in the execution of programmes, opposing any discriminary attitude and expression against anybody.

Staff development : Radio Kwizera is committed in improving the broadcasting skills and the professional standards of its staff, organizing in-service training and giving them opportunities to attend training courses and seminars. Furthermore Radio Kwizera makes its expertise in broadcasting available to other institutions and personnel.
