The Techanical  Profile of the Radio

The station started in 1995 with a transmitting power of 300W covering an area of about 70Kms sq. At this time, the studios had poor sound proof material which offered insufficient reverberation in the room, and the mixing of programs was mainly done in analog devices such as Tapes or Reel to reel / Revox and CDs.

Later, a 25W relay Station (booster) was later constructed in Chabalisa, Karagwe district which re-broadcasted the signal to refugees from Rwanda who by then had camped in Karagwe region.

In 1999, A 2KW transmitter with high gain omni directional antennas was installed in Ngara main station, and after the repatriation of Rwandese refugees, the relay station at Chanyamisa was moved to Kibondo district for re-broadcasting  to the Burundians refugees in that area.

In 2001, Kibondo relay station 93.6MHz was reconstructed with a higher antenna tower and a transmitting power of 2KW using the directional antennas which transmitted signals to all the 5 camps in the district as well as the neighboring regions.

In 2006 another Relay Station 91.00MHz was constructed at Kasulu region, and this helped to transmit more signals to Burundians and Congolese in the camps at Kasulu and Kigoma. This booster  also connected the local Kasulu population for years since they were formerly out of radio communication.

Now technology has widely changed from the studios, transmitters and in the use the office appliances within the station. Digital recording and mixing are now done in the well ventilated and excellent sound proof studios. Multimedia Computers and Professional CD drives are used for our digital recording, editing, and mixing of programms in the studios as well as in playing of programs and music.

Digital transmitters in Ngara and Kasulu are now covering large parts of Kagera, Kigoma, Burundi, Rwanda.and Congo DRC.

Our journalists in the relay stations of Kibondo and Kasulu are able to record programs and mix them in the their small studios, and are able to send them to them main station in Ngara by using a professional FTP program on the internet for airing.

Part of Tanzania:        Mabibo Kinondoni district in Dar es Salaam.

Daily activities:     To make sure that the Radio station is on air and that the Studios and other Communication equipments are in working condition.

Economic challenges:     The location of Ngara, Kibondo and Kasulu are located in remote parts of Tanzania where by good services and institutions for higher learning and trainings are unavailable.  No electricity in Kibondo and Kasulu we are really difficult environment to power the Radio equipment continuously days and nights by using the diesel generator. The Availability of spare parts for most of electronics devices in these areas is extremely difficult.

Geographic challenges: These areas, especially Ngara district, are the mountainous, and whenever there is rain, scary lightning storms and thunders often rock the place. Though we   have tried to install some lightning arrestors, the lightning still keeps disturbing the electrical system as the lightening comes in extreme magnitudes.   Sometimes, National electric supplies and telephone lines in the district would cease for whole week. This affects much of our work the station.

Duties:

To make sure that the Radio Station is working properly, and to support our technicians at the booster stations in Kibondo and Kasulu.

To train new RK staff on how to use radio equipments and on anything they would want to know concerning technical issues.

I started working with Radio Kwizera since July 1997. Before joining RK I was working with Care International which was working with Rwandese Refugees at Benaco and Musuhura camps in Ngara District.

When Radio Kwizera started, I remember some of my favorite programs which made me join RK; one was FOCUS ON NGARA and the KWIZERA DOCTOR. These programs were sensistizing the audience  on development and health.  I am  interested in the educative programs which are produced and aired by Radio Kwizera. I also enjoy Reggae Music which is aired every Saturday evening.

Challenges.

Ngara is located in a remote part of Tanzania yet the daily subsistence needs are quite costly compared to other areas like Mwanza. The people are poor, nevertheless they work hard to fight poverty. All roads are dirty except the main road going to Burundi and Rwanda; electricity is in the town where government offices are based and it is extended to some few kilometers outside Ngara town.

In Ngara, there are no factories. The place has a huge potential for food processing industries, agric-businesss, given the fertile soils with reliable rainfall patterns. unfortunately, no investor is interested in this remote part of the country. During the rain season,  it is terrible because people often get killed by  lightening, not to mention the damage it does to electronic equipments.

I like Radio Kwizera for its collective work sprit, and it is marvelous. God bless you all.

Message.

The Leaders should work hard and consider the challenges as strives for success.

We shall win.
