RADIO KWIZERA

Radio Kwizera’s Mission  is to reach to the refugee and the local population, not merely as an audience, but as people who have a stake  in the project. Radio Kwizera’s task is, through the facilities and expertise , to facilitate access of the listeners to the airwaves, with a view of empowering them to articulate their concerns and mobilise them for peace, reconciliation, and development.

Radio Kwizera’s mandate covers:

Information & Communication: Providing comprehensible, balanced, and accurate news at the local, regional, national and international levels. RK has also opened

 

Education: Promoting formal education programmes for primary school students, and an on-going education programmes in topics like health, nutrition, agriculture, environment, law, human rights, etc.

 

Development: Radio Kwizera favours a community approach of development understood as a process run by the people themselves improving their living conditions and  increasing the opportunities available to them. RK programmes expand their knowledge and awareness for alternative and practical methods of working and living.

 

Entertainment: Radio Kwizera meets the entertainment needs of the refugees  and the local population. This includes broadcasting and playing music which  are culturally relevant to the listeners.

 

Culture: Radio Kwizera encourages a critical and balanced exploration of the listeners  cultures. RK highlights the worth of local cultures in the face of powerful external influences and equips people to deal with these influences rather than being overwhelmed by them.

 

Religion: Radio Kwizera’s religious programmes adopt an open position promoting ecumenical and inter-religious dialogues which contribute to respectful relationships easing cohesion among the population.

 

Peace and Reconciliation:  The promotion of peace and reconciliation are core issues in RK programmes as the radio has the mandate to be a tool for mutual understanding , then peace building and peace keeping are crucial tenants.

 

Our Editorial Policy develops  the following priorities.

 

Service of the audience:  RK serves the refugee and the local population without discrimination and with an open attitude promoting dialogues and understanding. The only editorial restriction regards statements and programmes, which are offensive to other people, groups of people, organisations and religions.

 

Community involvement.  A central aspect of RK ‘s editorial policy consists in providing the means by which the community may dialogue with itself. RK as a community radio encourages refugees and the local people to have access to the air waves.

Other services:

RK accepts to make announcements, and advertisements from the public at affordable costs. We also invites individuals, groups, NGO’s, Local  and International Agencies to sponsor Programmes as  means of supporting the Radio.

Politics:  on political issues RK keeps neutral position with regard to the political affairs and the stands of her audience.

Our Commitment: Marginal and oppressed groups: although RK addresses all people without any discrimination, its commitment gives priority to the poor and the powerless. RK aims to create opportunities to marginal groups to speak for them and to organize their own actions for transformation and liberation.

Women, youth and children: Some programs are especially dedicated to women, youth and children issues. Women and youth are crucial for any structural change and development to take place while children are the future of any society. RK involves them in the execution of programs, opposing any discriminatory attitude and expression against anybody.
