A rare recognition for children’s rights advocate among refugees: Baruani Ndume, a participant in Radio Kwizera’s “Child for Child” program was named the International Children’s Peace Prize winner for 2009. Baruani, only 16 years old and a  refugee at Lugufu camp, hailed from The Democratic Republic of Congo. Has been at the camp since he was 7 years old.

Necessity the mother of invention. Indeed, the work of Radio Kwizera (RK) for the past thirteen years was necessitated by the need to serve refugees who had fled the infamous Rwandan genocide in 1994, when, in about 100 days 800,000 − one million people were killed. Fearing imminent  persecution, Rwandans crossed the Rusumo border in search of safety in the neighboring country Tanzania.  There they were hosted in Ngara district situated in the north western  part of the country...

Voices from the affected: Women and youth are crucial for any structural change and development to take place. While children are the future of any society. RK involves them in the execution of programs, opposing any discriminatory attitude and expression against anybody.

Since the establishment of Radio Kwizera in 1995, much has been achieved. These achievements in service to refugees and the local community have been appreciated by several local and international institutions of higher education and many other organizations that work for peace and development within the Great Lakes Region of Africa.  Former RK director, Elias Mokua, now in the University of Melbourne, Australia highlights these achievements in an interview on the link below...
